Is hearing loss affecting you at work?

Is hearing loss affecting you at work?

As people are living longer and healthier lives, the number of people working past the age of 70 is growing rapidly. More people are pushing back retirement, choosing to work into their golden years.

Working longer can bring us many benefits such as additional income and more interaction with the local community. It can keep us mentally active,  help us to feel younger and give us a sense of purpose. It can also help us to feel more socially and emotionally connected. The Dutch found out recently that when they encouraged people to work longer, they lived longer. The mortality rate, just between ages 62 and 65, fell by 32% among those men that stayed in work.

Are you suffering with hearing loss at work?

However, if you suffer from hearing loss, it can affect your work performance. Even a mild hearing loss can make you seem less competent to your co-workers. This can affect your confidence and your self-esteem. You may miss out on important conversations or may make mistakes because you mis-heard the objective at hand.

If your hearing isn’t what it used to be, at work you might find that you:

  • struggle to follow what people say during meetings
  • often ask colleagues to repeat what they say
  • often misunderstand what is being said
  • find it hard to understand speech over the telephone
  • avoid socialising with colleagues
  • often get confused about which direction sound is coming from.
